Fred
Malek is the founder and Chairman of Thayer Capital Partners and provides senior level advice to Thayer | Hidden Creek. Prior
to establishing Thayer in 1991, Mr. Malek co-led the buyout of Northwest
Airlines and then served as its President and Vice Chairman; led the
buyout of CB Richard Ellis; led the acquisition of the Ritz-Carlton
Hotel Company; and participated in the acquisition and ownership of
the Texas Rangers baseball team. Before leading those buyouts, he
served as President of Marriott Hotels & Resorts over an eight-year
period when profits quadrupled and market value increased eight times.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Malek was a management consultant with
McKinsey & Co., and in 1967 he co-founded Triangle Corp., a hand
tool manufacturer. He currently serves as a Director of several publicly
traded companies, including Automatic Data Processing Corp. and CB Richard Ellis.
In addition to his work in the private sector, Fred Malek has had
a distinguished career in public service. Mr. Malek served as Special
Assistant to the President and then as Deputy Director of OMB from
1970 to 1974. Mr. Malek advised President Reagan as a member of
the executive committee of the President’s Council on Cost
Control, as a member of the President’s Commission on Private
Sector Initiatives and as a member of the President’s Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports. He served under President George
H. W. Bush as Director of the 1988 Republican Convention and as
Director of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations, holding
the rank of Ambassador. During 1992, Mr. Malek had the privilege
of serving as Campaign Manager for President George H. W. Bush.
Since founding Thayer, Fred Malek has formed seven institutional private
equity funds under the Thayer name, including three corporate acquisition
funds with approximately $1.5 billion in committed capital and four
funds that target hotel investments with over $500 million in committed
capital.
Fred Malek is a 1959 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West
Point and served in Vietnam. He received his Master of Business Administration
from the Harvard Business School in 1964.
